SOLID BAMBOO, A SOLID NAME
Solid bamboo; in terms of appearance and structure, it is comparable to (tropical) hardwood. It has many differences in quality, such as durability class, the degree of surface roughness, and even the sensitivity to mould formation.
TECHNICAL PROPERTIES OF SOLID BAMBOO
WHICH TYPE OF BAMBOO IS SUITABLE FOR YOUR PROJECT?
THE RIGHT MATERIAL FOR EVERY PROJECT
Different types of bamboo are used. The properties of these types vary greatly. It’s therefore important that you make sure that you choose the right type of bamboo wood for your project. There are two types:
Solid bamboo or Strand-woven bamboo
Solid bamboo is the universal name for laminated bamboo, sometimes called side-pressed (vertical) or plain-pressed (horizontal) bamboo. This is due to the two ways of laminating. For years, solid bamboo was only suitable for indoor use, such as in parquet, stairs, (interior) window frames and counters. Especially in recent years, we have seen lots of bamboo used in kitchens, such as cutting boards, knife blocks, salad bowls, and more. Since 2010, solid bamboo can also be used outside. Think of, for instance: façade cladding and window frames, bridge sections, street furniture, and, of course, also all garden wood applications. Such as bamboo terrace boards and fences.
Laminated bamboo is comprised of bamboo strips. These (long rectangular) strips are glued together in an upright or flat manner, so that a sheet or a beam is formed. Laminated bamboo comes in a variety of thicknesses. It starts with veneer measuring only 0.6mm to solid laminated bamboo: 0.6mm to solid laminated bamboo sheets. Even thicker sizes, for example, for inner frames measuring 67x114mm and other common sizes, are directly available and in stock.
Strand-woven bamboo is also called pressed bamboo. It’s also known as 5th generation bamboo, bamboo composite, extreme bamboo, SWB5G or XL bamboo. Due to its hardness and high durability class, solid bamboo is not only ideal for indoor, but also for outdoor applications.
Solid bamboo is made from compressed bamboo fibres or strands. During pressing, heat is added for optimal adhesion and lifespan of the material.
Strand-woven bamboo is produced in different ways in Asia, which in turn influences the (physical) properties of the material. The strand-woven bamboo that we import is produced in a special – patented – way, which gives it the highest possible quality class. With firm guarantees!
